Verb blepō (to see, observe, look) in the Gospels-Acts

(Translation from NRSV for the New Testament with a few modifications for a more literal meaning)


Matthew

5: 28But I say to you that everyone who looks (blepō) at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
6: 4so that your alms may be done in secret; and your Father who sees (blepō) in secret will reward you.
6: 6But whenever you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees (blepō) in secret will reward you.
6: 18so that your fasting may be seen not by others but by your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees (blepō) in secret will reward you.
7: 3Why do you see (blepō) the speck in your neighbor's eye, but do not notice the log in your own eye?
11: 4Jesus answered them, "Go and tell John what you hear and see (blepō):
12: 22Then they brought to him a demoniac who was blind and mute; and he cured him, so that the one who had been mute could speak and see (blepō).
13: 13The reason I speak to them in parables is that 'looking (blepō) they do not see (blepō), and hearing they do not listen, nor do they understand.'
13: 14With them indeed is fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah that says: 'You will indeed listen, but never understand, and you will indeed look (blepō), but never see (blepō).
13: 16But blessed are your eyes, for they see (blepō), and your ears, for they hear.
13: 17Truly I tell you, many prophets and righteous people longed to see what you look at (blepō), but did not see it, and to hear what you hear, but did not hear it.
14: 30But observing (blepō) the strong wind, he became frightened, and beginning to sink, he cried out, "Lord, save me!"
15: 31so that the crowd was amazed when they observe (blepō) the mute speaking, the maimed whole, the lame walking, and the blind seeing (blepō). And they praised the God of Israel.
18: 10"Take care that you do not despise one of these little ones; for, I tell you, in heaven their angels continually see (blepō) the face of my Father in heaven.
22: 16So they sent their disciples to him, along with the Herodians, saying, "Teacher, we know that you are sincere, and teach the way of God in accordance with truth, and show deference to no one; for you do not look (blepō) at people with partiality.
24: 2Then he asked them, "You see (blepō) all these, do you not? Truly I tell you, not one stone will be left here upon another; all will be thrown down."
24: 4Jesus answered them, "See (blepō) that no one leads you astray.

Mark

4: 12in order that 'they may indeed look (blepō), but not perceive, and may indeed listen, but not understand; so that they may not turn again and be forgiven.'"
4: 24And he said to them, "Look (blepō) at what you hear; the measure you give will be the measure you get, and still more will be given you.
5: 31And his disciples said to him, "You see (blepō) the crowd pressing in on you; how can you say, 'Who touched me?'"

13: 33Beware (blepō), keep alert; for you do not know when the time will come.

Luke

6: 41Why do you see (blepō) the speck in your neighbor's eye, but do not notice the log in your own eye?
6: 42Or how can you say to your neighbor, 'Friend, let me take out the speck in your eye,' when you yourself do not see (blepō) the log in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see (blepō) clearly to take the speck out of your neighbor's eye.
7: 21Jesus had just then cured many people of diseases, plagues, and evil spirits, and had given to many blind people to see (blepō).
7: 44Then turning toward the woman, he said to Simon, "Do you see (blepō) this woman? I entered your house; you gave me no water for my feet, but she has bathed my feet with her tears and dried them with her hair.
8: 10He said, "To you it has been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of God; but to others I speak in parables, so that looking they may not see (blepō), and listening they may not understand.

John

1: 29The next day he saw (blepō) Jesus coming toward him and declared, "Here is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!
5: 19Jesus said to them, "Very truly, I tell you, the Son can do nothing on his own, but only what he sees (blepō) the Father doing; for whatever the Father does, the Son does likewise.

9: 39Jesus said, "I came into this world for judgment so that those who do not see (blepō) may see (blepō), and those who do see (blepō) may become blind."
9: 41Jesus said to them, "If you were blind, you would not have sin. But now that you say, 'We see (blepō),' your sin remains.

Acts

1: 9When he had said this, as they were observing (blepō), he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight.
2: 33Being therefore exalted at the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, he has poured out this that you both see (blepō) and hear.
3: 4Peter looked intently at him, as did John, and said, "Look (blepō) at us."
4: 14When they saw (blepō) the man who had been cured standing beside them, they had nothing to say in opposition.
8: 6The crowds with one accord listened eagerly to what was said by Philip, hearing and seeing (blepō) the signs that he did,
9: 8Saul got up from the ground, and though his eyes were open, he could see (blepō) nothing; so they led him by the hand and brought him into Damascus.

13: 40Therefore, see (blepō) that what the prophets said does not happen to you:
27: 12Since the harbor was not suitable for spending the winter, the majority was in favor of putting to sea from there, on the chance that somehow they could reach Phoenix, where they could spend the winter. It was a harbor of Crete, looking (blepō) southwest and northwest.
28: 26'Go to this people and say, You will indeed listen, but never understand, and you will indeed look (blepō), but never see (blepō).

1: 8Yourselves beware (blepō), so that you do not lose what we have worked for, but may receive a full reward.
