Verb derō (to beat) in the Gospels-Acts

(Translation from NRSV with a few modifications for a more literal meaning)


Matthew

21: 35But the tenants seized his slaves and beat (derō) one, killed another, and stoned another.

Mark

12: 3But they seized him, and beat (derō) him, and sent him away empty-handed.
12: 5Then he sent another, and that one they killed. And so it was with many others; some they beat (derō), and others they killed.
13: 9"As for yourselves, beware; for they will hand you over to councils; and you will be beaten (derō) in synagogues; and you will stand before governors and kings because of me, as a testimony to them.

Luke

12: 47That slave who knew what his master wanted, but did not prepare himself or do what was wanted, will be severely beaten (derō).
12: 48But the one who did not know and did what deserved a beating will be lightly beaten (derō). From everyone to whom much has been given, much will be required; and from the one to whom much has been entrusted, even more will be demanded.
20: 10When the season came, he sent a slave to the tenants in order that they might give him his share of the produce of the vineyard; but the tenants beat (derō) him and sent him away empty-handed.

John

18: 23Jesus answered, "If I have spoken wrongly, testify to the wrong. But if I have spoken rightly, why do you beat (derō) me?"

Acts

5: 40and when they had called in the apostles, they had them beaten (derō). Then they ordered them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go.
16: 37But Paul replied, "They have beaten (derō) us in public, uncondemned, men who are Roman citizens, and have thrown us into prison; and now are they going to discharge us in secret? Certainly not! Let them come and take us out themselves."
