Verb katheudō (to sleep) in the Gospels-Acts

(Translation from NRSV with a few modifications for a more literal meaning)


Matthew

8: 24A windstorm arose on the sea, so great that the boat was being swamped by the waves; but he was sleeping (katheudō).
9: 24he said, "Go away; for the girl is not dead but sleeping (katheudō)." And they laughed at him.
13: 25but while everybody was sleeping (katheudō), an enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat, and then went away.
25: 5As the bridegroom was delayed, all of them became drowsy and slept (katheudō).
26: 40Then he came to the disciples and found them sleeping (katheudō); and he said to Peter, "So, could you not stay awake with me one hour?
26: 43Again he came and found them sleeping (katheudō), for their eyes were heavy.
26: 45Then he came to the disciples and said to them, "Are you still sleeping (katheudō) and taking your rest? See, the hour is at hand, and the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.

Mark

4: 27and would sleep (katheudō) and rise night and day, and the seed would sprout and grow, he does not know how.
4: 38But he was in the stern, sleeping (katheudō) on the cushion; and they woke him up and said to him, "Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?"
5: 39When he had entered, he said to them, "Why do you make a commotion and weep? The child is not dead but sleeping (katheudō)."
13: 36or else he may find you sleeping (katheudō) when he comes suddenly.
14: 37He came and found them sleeping (katheudō); and he said to Peter, "Simon, are you sleeping (katheudō)? Could you not keep awake one hour?

Luke

8: 52They were all weeping and wailing for her; but he said, "Do not weep; for she is not dead but sleeping (katheudō)."
22: 46and he said to them, "Why are you sleeping (katheudō)? Get up and pray that you may not come into the time of trial."
