Verb phainō (to appear, to shine) in the New Testament

(Translation from NRSV for the New Testament with a few modifications for a more literal meaning)

Matthew

1: 20But just when he had resolved to do this, an angel of the Lord appeared (phainō) to him in a dream and said, "Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, for the child conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.
2: 7Then Herod secretly called for the wise men and learned from them the exact time when the star had appeared (phainō).
2: 13Now after they had left, an angel of the Lord appeared (phainō) to Joseph in a dream and said, "Get up, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you; for Herod is about to search for the child, to destroy him."
2: 19When Herod died, an angel of the Lord suddenly appeared (phainō) in a dream to Joseph in Egypt and said,
6: 5"And whenever you pray, do not be like the hypocrites; for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, so that they may appear (phainō) to men. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward.
6: 16"And whenever you fast, do not look dismal, like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces so as to appear (phainō) to others that they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward.
6: 18so that your fasting may appear (phainō) not to others but to your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.
9: 33And when the demon had been cast out, the one who had been mute spoke; and the crowds were amazed and said, "Never has anything like this appeared (phainō) in Israel."
13: 26So when the plants came up and bore grain, then the weeds appeared (phainō) as well.
23: 27"Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs, which on the outside appear (phainō) beautiful, but inside they are full of the bones of the dead and of all kinds of filth.

Mark

Luke

John

1: 5The light shines (phainō) in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it.
5: 35He was a burning and shining (phainō) lamp, and you were willing to rejoice for a while in his light.

1 John

2: 8Yet I am writing you a new commandment that is true in him and in you, because the darkness is passing away and the true light is already shining (phainō).

Philippians

2: 15so that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, in which you shine (phainō) like stars in the world.

2 Corinthians

13: 7But we pray to God that you may not do anything wrong - not that we may appear (phainō) to have met the test, but that you may do what is right, though we may seem to have failed.

Romans

7: 13Did what is good, then, bring death to me? By no means! It was sin, working death in me through what is good, in order that sin might appear (phainō) to be sin, and through the commandment might become sinful beyond measure.

Hebrews

11: 3By faith we understand that the worlds were prepared by the word of God, so that what is seen was made from things that cannot appear (phainō).

James

4: 14Yet you do not even know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears (phainō) for a little while and then vanishes.

1 Peter

4: 18And "If it is hard for the righteous to be saved, how will the ungodly and the sinners appear (phainō)?"

2 Peter

1: 19So we have the prophetic message more fully confirmed. You will do well to be attentive to this as to a lamp shining (phainō) in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts.

Revelation

1: 16In his right hand he held seven stars, and from his mouth came a sharp, two-edged sword, and his face was like the sun shining (phainō) with full force.
8: 12The fourth angel blew his trumpet, and a third of the sun was struck, and a third of the moon, and a third of the stars, so that a third of their light was darkened; a third of the day did not appear (phainō), and likewise the night.
18: 23and the light of a lamp will shine (phainō) in you no more; and the voice of bridegroom and bride will be heard in you no more; for your merchants were the magnates of the earth, and all nations were deceived by your sorcery.
21: 23And the city has no need of sun or moon to shine (phainō) on it, for the glory of God is its light, and its lamp is the Lamb.
