2 Some Pharisees came, and to test him they asked, "Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?" 2 The Pharisees approached and asked, "Is it lawful for a husband to divorce his wife?" They were testing him.2 And there came unto him Pharisees, and asked him, Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife? trying him.2 Some Pharisees approached him and asked, "Is it against the law for a man to divorce his wife?" They were testing him.2 Some Pharisees came and tested him by asking, "Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?"2 And the Pharisees came to him, and asked him, Is it lawful for a man to put away [his] wife? tempting him.
3 He answered them, "What did Moses command you?" 3 He said to them in reply, "What did Moses command you?"3 And he answered and said unto them, What did Moses command you?3 He answered them, "What did Moses command you?"3 "What did Moses command you?" he replied.3 And he answered and said unto them, What did Moses command you?
4 They said, "Moses allowed a man to write a certificate of dismissal and to divorce her." 4 They replied, "Moses permitted him to write a bill of divorce and dismiss her."4 And they said, Moses suffered to write a bill of divorcement, and to put her away.4 "Moses allowed us," they said, "to draw up a writ of dismissal and so to divorce."4 They said, "Moses permitted a man to write a certificate of divorce and send her away."4 And they said, Moses suffered to write a bill of divorcement, and to put [her] away.
5 But Jesus said to them, "Because of your hardness of heart he wrote this commandment for you. 5 But Jesus told them, "Because of the hardness of your hearts he wrote you this commandment.5 But Jesus said unto them, For your hardness of heart he wrote you this commandment.5 Then Jesus said to them, "It was because you were so unteachable that he wrote this commandment for you.5 "It was because your hearts were hard that Moses wrote you this law," Jesus replied.5 And Jesus answered and said unto them, For the hardness of your heart he wrote you this precept.
